Hendon Football Club – Walking football
Walking Football for adults. (40 + teams)
Brent is very keen to have their community active and engaged in all levels of sports and leisure. We know there is a direct link between cardiovascular disease and vascular dementia. You can get more information on this on the Alzheimer’s society website http://www.alzheimers.org.uk/site/scripts/documents_info.php?documentID=161.
So to ensure we reduce the risks we are also looking at getting more adults active. We met with Robert Morris and Thomas Stockman, Directors of the Hendon FC in Brent. www.hendonfc.net Hendon lost their football grounds to development as did Edgware and they have now joined forces and operating in Brent at the West Hendon Playing Fields, Townsend Lane, NW9 7NE. We are delighted to announce that the west Hendon Football fields will be the first sporting facility working towards being memory loss friendly.
Hendon FC is a community club that has an outreach programme that is fully inclusive.
Robert said “We see this as an excellent opportunity to engage with those that are sadly overlooked by sporting organisations because of their age. Hendon FC are delighted to work with CAD Brent in becoming a dementia friendly club”
He goes on to say that
“Tom and I have personal reasons for being so interested in this project. Tom cared for a good friend, Alex who lived with Alzheimer’s for two years and recently died. He saw first hand the impact on his friend but also the primary carers, along with other family members. Alex, who Tom cared for, would have benefitted from Walking Football and his wife would have welcomed a good support network when he was playing his football”.
Robert also added “I have had three heart attacks in the last seven years. The link between cardiovascular disease and vascular dementia strikes a chord with me and I would like to make a difference to others in fighting this preventable illness. Exercise and a sensible diet are key to improving health and reducing cardiovascular disease and we are here to help with that”.
Tom and Robert are passionate about football ” to have the opportunity of playing well into our dotage is exciting even if walking out at Wembley Stadium for the FA Cup Final may now be a distant dream. Walking Football is the way of us to grow old gracefully and continue to play the game we love” We plan our first walking football in July. We will have people of all ages but you need to be over 4-0 to join us. Men and women are welcome.
Please get in touch with Morris and Tom at admin@hendonfc.net or ring us on 020 8205 1645. We also want people living with memory loss to join our team of walking footballers. Come and watch a game or be one of our supporters. We also have social evenings at our club and we welcome every person who has memory loss and their family carers.
